Treatment for two people can put pressure on a household budget. Get a written estimate for each partner before you pay a deposit or book travel.

We do not have documented current facility quotes. We have removed price ranges from the earlier draft rather than present them as verified national rates.

What affects the cost

Costs depend on the services, location, length of care, and insurance plan. Ask a clinician which level of care each person needs. Both partners may need different services.

Service Questions for the written estimate
Withdrawal care Are medical visits, medicines, labs, and transfers included?
Residential treatment Are housing, meals, individual care, and couples sessions included?
Outpatient care How many visits are planned? Is housing charged separately?
Recovery housing What are rent, deposits, utilities, and refund terms?

Ask what happens to the bill if one partner leaves or transfers to another service. Use our admissions checklist.

How insurance works for two partners

Check coverage for each person and each proposed service. Approval for one partner does not establish coverage for the other.

Marketplace health plans cover mental health and substance use services. This does not promise coverage for a particular center, shared room, or couples session. Check your plan’s network and approval rules before admission.

Individual and family deductibles

Do not assume you must pay two full individual deductibles. HealthCare.gov explains that family plans often have both individual and family deductibles. How they apply depends on your plan.

Call the number on your insurance card. Ask:

  • Is the exact site and proposed service in network for each person?
  • How much of our individual and family deductibles has been met?
  • What copays or coinsurance will apply?
  • What are the individual and family out-of-pocket limits?
  • Is prior approval needed, and how are extra days approved?
  • Are couples sessions covered, and under what benefit?

Record the call date and reference number. Ask for a written benefit summary. An estimate of benefits is not a promise that every bill will be paid.

Luxury care and extra charges

Ask for a list of optional services and their prices. A private room does not tell you how good the care is. Ask about staff credentials and the treatment plan first.

Public and low-cost options

Use FindTreatment.gov or call SAMHSA at 1-800-662-4357 for help finding services. Ask about public funds and reduced fees. Check who qualifies and which beds are open.

In California, use the county access lines listed by DHCS. Our California guide and Florida guide explain where to check local providers.

Free or funded care does not guarantee that partners can stay together. Check if each person qualifies. Ask about the center’s rules.

Before paying a deposit

Get the center’s name and address in writing. Ask for each charge and the refund rules. Ask who pays any referral service. Take time to check the license and insurance details. Read our how-to-choose guide and sober living guide before committing to care or housing.
