Recovery homes offer a place to live without substance use. They can also offer support after treatment. A home may accept individuals without accepting partners as a pair. Check the exact home’s current rules before you pay or move.

SAMHSA provides information on recovery housing. Housing and clinical treatment can be separate services. Ask what support is actually provided on site.

Can couples live together in recovery housing?

Ask each home whether it accepts partners, whether rooms are shared, and whether both people must meet separate admission rules. A listing labeled “couples sober living” does not establish those details.

Ask about guests, overnight stays, testing, medicines, transport, and work schedules. Get the rules in writing. If one partner needs more clinical support, discuss that with the care team before choosing housing.

Oxford House rules

Oxford House’s FAQ says that men and women do not live in the same Oxford House. That is not a rule for every recovery home or every couple. Ask the home about its rules. Check if it would allow your plans.

Check the home and its support

Ask which public or certification body oversees the home, if any. Check a claimed seal with the group that issued it. A treatment center’s license may not cover a separate home.

Ask who is on site, how concerns are handled, and what happens if someone returns to substance use. Ask about privacy and where to store medicines. Check what staff do in a crisis.

Our admissions checklist can help you track questions about both care and housing.

Rent and other costs

We do not have verified current rent quotes for couples recovery housing. Ask for a written estimate from each home.

Check rent, deposits, utilities, food, testing fees, and refund terms. Ask whether clinical visits cost extra and check coverage with your insurer. Do not assume that insurance covers housing because it covers treatment.

Read our cost and insurance guide before committing to a package of care and lodging.

Alternatives to a shared home

Discuss separate nearby homes, outpatient care with other safe housing, or other local support with your discharge team. Ask about travel, contact rules, and follow-up visits.

There is no timetable on this page for moving back in together. Think about each person’s needs. Check the home’s safety and what support is in place. Read our relationships guide and use our program search guide for treatment resources.
